UTCs are set up by universities and employers. They specialise in one or two technical subjects and take pupils aged 14-19. Students can also join in Year 10 and in Year 12 for a curriculum that will generally offer a greater range of vocational qualifications than a traditional sixth form but may also offer A levels.
The curriculum is often designed in partnership with employers who will then come into the UTC to run projects or provide work experience for students. Students may progress on to apprenticeships with these employers but many go onto university to study a range of related degrees.
The two nearest UTCs to Hackney are:
- Mulberry UTC (Digital technology Healthcare and medical services) in Tower Hamlets
- London Design and Engineering UTC (LDEUTC) (Design Engineering) in the Docklands
