Apply for a secondary school place

Offer of a school place

If you apply online you will receive an email on the evening of Tuesday 1 March 2022 to inform you of the outcome of your application. If you apply using a paper application, your offer will be sent by email on 1 March.

The offer will be for the highest ranked school on your application that is able to offer your child a place. If your child is not offered a place at any of your preferred schools they will normally be offered a place at the nearest Hackney school to your home that has vacancies remaining.

You are encouraged to accept the place you have been offered and wait to see if you can be offered a higher preference from the waiting list. Accepting the offer will not reduce your chances of gaining a place from the waiting list. Rejecting the offer will not increase your chances of gaining a place from the waiting list.

How do I respond to the offer?

You must respond to the offer by Tuesday 15 March 2022. Your offer email will explain how to respond online. You will need to log into your online application using your email address or username and your password. Your username was emailed to you when you registered to apply online. Your password was chosen by you when you registered to apply online but it was not sent via email.

If you applied using a paper application form you must respond as instructed. If you don’t respond by 15 March we may withdraw the offer. We also need to know if your circumstances have changed and you no longer want the place.

What happens next?

Some families decline their offer, so there may be a small number of places offered to the next children on the waiting list after 1 March. If your child can be offered a place we will contact you by telephone to make the offer in the week ending 1 April 2022. You will only be contacted if we can offer a higher preference school.

Why wasn’t I offered my first preference?

Hackney schools are very popular and have a limited number of places to offer. If you were not offered your first preference it is because all the places were offered to children who had a higher priority than your child according to the schools’ admission criteria.

Read information about how places were offered at oversubscribed schools in Hackney. This shows how many places were offered in each band, the criteria and the cut-off distances (where applicable). For schools outside Hackney you can contact the Local Authority where the school is located for this information.

Waiting lists

If you have been offered your first preference school your child will not be added to any waiting lists. If you have been offered a place at a lower preference school, your child will automatically be added to the waiting lists of any Hackney schools you ranked higher on your application form. If you have been refused a place at all Hackney schools you listed on your application form, your child will automatically be added to the waiting lists for all of them.

Your child’s position on the lists will be worked out according to the admissions criteria for each school and can go up or down as other children leave or join the lists. Waiting lists are not managed on a first come first served basis.

If you applied for transfer to Year 7 in September 2022 your child will remain on waiting lists for Hackney schools until October Half Term 2022.

You must re-apply for your child to remain on waiting lists after half term. To ensure that your child remains on the waiting list and in consideration you must make a separate 2022/23 In Year application before Friday 21 October 2022. You can make an In Year application to remain on the waiting list from 1 September 2022 onward.

Please note, we are unable to contact you directly to remind you to reapply, it is your responsibility to remember.

Further offers

After 2 March new applications and changes of preference continue to be processed and offers are made on behalf of schools. Schools do not offer places directly.

The second round of offers will be made in the week ending 1 April 2022. These offers will include all late applicants, additional preferences and changes to applications (e.g. change of address). The deadline for changes to be included in this round is Friday 11 March 2022.

Offers will then be made regularly when places become available. Only successful applicants will be contacted.
