Apply for a secondary school place

This admissions process is for children in Year 6 (born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015) who will start secondary school in September 2026. You should apply by 31 October 2025.

If you have moved to the area or wish to change secondary schools (your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014) you can apply to change schools 'in-year' and be offered a place to start as quickly as possible. If you want your child to go to a different school, discuss any concerns with your current school. Changing schools can be very disruptive for children.

Secondary school transfer guide

Before you start you might find it useful to read through our secondary transfer guide which contains all of the key information you need to make your applications.

Secondary school transfer briefings

View an online information session using your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. School admissions staff will host the briefings.

School open events

Open events at Hackney secondary schools are held in September and October. These are for families with children who will transfer to secondary school in September 2026, but anyone can attend.

Children with Education, Health and Care Plans

There is a separate transfer process for Year 6 pupils who have an Education, Health and Care Plan or are issued with a draft plan by 17 October 2025. You will get an application form to complete from the Education, Health and Care Planning (EHCP) team. You should use this form to list the schools you prefer for your child.

Children educated out of their normal age group

If your child is currently educated out of their normal age group, you can request that this continues, and your child remains in their current year group when they start secondary school.

If your child is in current Year 5 and you wish to defer their start into secondary school from September 2026 to September 2027, you must apply in the normal way for a secondary school place (deadline Friday 31 October 2025).

You should discuss your child’s circumstances with your preferred secondary schools who will decide whether or not they can remain out of their normal age group. Hackney Education makes this decision on behalf of Stoke Newington School and Sixth Form.

If your child is offered a place at a school that does not agree with your request, your child will be placed in their normal year group according to their age.

If your child is in current Year 6 and you wish to defer their start into secondary school from September 2025 to September 2026, you must contact the Admissions Team before you can apply online.
